AQA published a provisional timetable for the May and June 2027 exams in January 2026. As of October 2026, the version on its dates and timetables page is version 1.1, no longer marked provisional, and it gives the same dates for the four English papers. Every one is a morning paper. AQA’s published start time for morning exams is 9.00am.

The four English papers

  • English Literature Paper 1 (8702/1): Wednesday 12 May 2027, 1 hour 45 minutes
  • English Literature Paper 2 (8702/2): Wednesday 19 May 2027, 2 hours 15 minutes
  • English Language Paper 1 (8700/1): Monday 24 May 2027, 1 hour 45 minutes
  • English Language Paper 2 (8700/2): Tuesday 8 June 2027, 1 hour 45 minutes

Other dates

  • Friday 7 May 2027: AQA’s submission deadline for the spoken language endorsement (8700/C), which it lists as non-exam assessment.
  • Monday 10 May 2027: the first exam on the common timetable, according to JCQ.
  • Friday 18 June 2027: the last GCSE exam on the common timetable.
  • Wednesday 23 June 2027: the contingency day. AQA’s timetable says candidates “must remain available until Wednesday 23 June 2027 should an awarding body need to invoke its contingency plan”.
  • Wednesday 18 August 2027: results released to schools and colleges only.
  • Thursday 19 August 2027: results day for students.

What it means for English departments

Literature comes first, with its two papers a week apart, and Language Paper 1 follows five days after Literature Paper 2. Language Paper 2 is the last English paper, 15 days after Language Paper 1. All four papers fall within four weeks.

For revision plans, that order matters: Literature texts need to be secure by early May, and the Language papers have the most time in between. The spoken language endorsement has to be submitted by 7 May 2027, five days before the first written paper.

The dates and timings for parents are on GCSE English exam dates for 2027, and running the endorsement is covered in Running the spoken language endorsement.

What happens next

AQA calls the timetables on its page definitive and asks centres to check back for the latest version. These dates hold unless AQA issues a new version. The papers themselves will look different from past papers: on 22 September 2026 AQA announced a new layout for source texts and fewer question formats from summer 2027, with updated papers for classroom and mock use due on Centre Services later in the autumn term 2026.
